After Dark, June 16th--???

[It had been a long day. Maya had been saddled with these strange memories, right after the ritual. She would have ignored them as a silly vision, had things not started to play out in the same way. Souji was missing, and she knew something was up now. Unfortunately, Hiroshi, her prime suspect in the situation, seemed to know even less then she did. And, when they had gone off to investigate Souji's house once again, they found nothing.

Frankly, she was stuck, and time was running out.

In times like this, her thoughts strayed to her sister, Mia and what she might have to say in a moment like this. One of her lessons were, "if you were going to investigate, the best place to start would be the scene of the crime". There were no proper murder scenes, at least to Maya's knowledge, but the spot in the woods where they did the ritual seemed like a good place to start.

...After getting a burger, of course. You couldn't investigate properly on an empty stomach. but now they were getting down to business, and Maya was leading Hiroshi into the outer parts of the woods.]

So... do you think we'll find anything out here?

[He can't believe how much absolute nothing this whole situation has turned up. Maya's been following him the whole time, and even made him pay for burgers on top of that. Is he really entitled to pay for her just because she hallucinated he killed people?]

Besides ashes from the fire? I can hardly imagine. I have been pondering something, though.

[Maya, on the other hand, was determined to find some sort of evidence, and wasn't about to give up just yet.

She munched on a burger thoughtfully, finishing it off in a few chomps.]

Right... but, other then that. Oh, what is it?

You seem absolutely convinced that I am going to start killing a bunch of people, yes?

Yeah... I mean, I have these weird memories of you doing horrible things, but...

[She shrugged aimlessly.]

This is clearly not an admission of guilt, but are you certain isolating yourself with someone you believe to be insane in unwatched areas was the best approach you could have taken with this?

....Huh. I didn't think about that.

[Maya...]

I don't think it matters, though. Everyone will know you did something if I turn up dead and you're missing. Right?

Should you not place a little more priority on your own life? You should not have to out a murderer by offering yourself as the evidence you know -- eh?

[His foot just kicked something odd.]

Sometimes you gotta take matters into your own hands!

[...Huh? Maya stopped and crouched down to inspect...]

W-what?! It can't be...

This... this doll is...

Tomosuke!

[She snatches the doll off the ground, looking it over. Maya suddenly looked much more worried.]

B-but, Maria always keeps Tomosuke with her... i-if he's out here, then...!

[No no no, this can't be right. She must just be around playing "Witches" or something, right?]

Maria? Maria! Can you hear me? It is I, Hiroshi! Maya is with me! Maria?

Mariaaaa!!!

[Maya had switched to full-on panic mode. If Tomosuke was out there, then, it stood to reason that Maria was out here as well.

Only, she didn't see her.]

Maria! It's me! Maya! Where are you?!

[She head off a little further into the woods, calling Maria's name.

And then she screams.]

[He continues calling out, but there's a tight feeling in his stomach. He knows that nothing bad could have happened without proof and evidence. She may have just dropped it.

Right. Just dropped her beloved doll. In the middle of the woods.]

Maria! Maria, are you hurt?! Where are you?!

Hiroshi! O-over here!

[Maya called for him from a little ways away. She was standing over something, looking down in fear and shock.

It could only be one thing.]

Maya? You found...

[He stares in horror at the sight before him. What had once been a cheerful if troubled young girl was now nothing more than a corpse, a figure no more alive than the doll she had cherished. Trembling, he bends down towards her.]

...She looks as though she has been dragged to this position. Who could have done...?

[Maya could barely look at Maria's dead form. It hurt too much, so she had to turn away and wipe her eyes. She gripped Tomosuke tightly in her hands.]

Wh-why... Why would anyone do this?!

[She turned to him.

Did you do this?!

Wh-what? Don't be absurd! Doing this to a little girl... I know we had our differences, but I was still fond of her, believe me! At any rate, we were together all day, remember? And she was alive and well the last time we met!

Then, how did she die?!

[This seriously confused her. Maya frowned.]

This didn't happen before! Maria and I didn't die!

[He wants to snap at her, tell her that "visions" are just that: visions. But someone was dead, and this hardly felt the time for that. He takes a few breaths to control himself before bending down to look at her.]

We need to call the police immediately. They are much better equipped to handle this than we are. They can find...

[He swallows, and shakes his head.]

This may be trouble for us. Maria may have had a poor relationship with her mother, but if she thinks we had anything to do with her death, I cannot imagine what will happen. But we cannot just...

Y-yeah! We gotta find the police and have 'em search for the real killer!

[She looked almost angry, but her energy faltered.]

It could be any of our friends...

He stares at her, the cell phone just up to his ear.

You... you believe one of the others to be the killer?

[Maya quickly starts rummaging through her pockets for her own phone.]

I don't know! At least, I don't want to think so. In my memories, it was you! But, if it's not now, then that means someone else is!

[There's too much unexplained in all of this to Hiroshi. Maya's insistence that these hallucinations of hers were some sort of memory would have been easy to deal with. But then murders started happening, and people go missing -- HAVE been going missing, really -- and there is far too much coincidence going on for him to be comfortable. The rational part of his brain is yelling at him that Maya's logic is ludicrous, that nobody in their group necessarily HAS to be the murderer. But...]

We will need to get everybody together, try to figure this out rationally. If we are for some ludicrous reason being targeted, we would do best to inform everybody. And... we will have to break the news about Maria as well.

[For once in her life, Maya would have wanted to think rationally about this, and even agree with Hiroshi. But, that was not going to happen now, or ever if they didn't survive this. Her vision was a sign, and she had to do something.]

I'll text Haruhi! She'll have an idea of what to do!

[and she begins doing so.]

[Oh, MUST she? Still, he knows Suzumiya is smart. Perhaps an extra brain would be helpful.]

I will contact the police in the meantime. After that, we should contact the others.
