and of course, you can bet your behinds that Prez isn't going to have this. She lets the usual chatter stretch out for a little while before finally taking her place at the head of the room and slapping a hand down on the teacher's podium. ]

[She nods triumphantly.] Its gotta be Scotia!

[Maria writes 'Scotia' on the Australian-Indian plate. Then she points to the Arabian plate.] That one looks like a croissant!

Hmmmm... Croissants are from France... France is enemies with England... England has a Prince Phillip...

Ahhhh. Osaka is so smart. [Maria writes 'Phillipines' on the Arabian plate.]

That one looks like a weenie that got cut off!

[She's pointing to the Caribbean plate.]

Maria doesn't think any of the rest of the plates look like food.

[Which is about the point that Hiroshi finally reenters the room, looking mildly annoyed. He passes by Maria and Osaka.]

...? What are you two working on?

Osaka is helping Maria with homework! We're doing plate teck... tech... plates of the Earth! See?

[Maria holds up the worksheet, so Hiroshi can see all the wrong answers they've written down.]

...Maria, those answers are...

[He begins correcting her on, well, pretty much everything.]

[Maria watches Hiroshi fix her homework.]

... but those plates don't look anything like the foods the names match with.

[Hmmmm. She glances over Hiroshi's work from the other side. This doesn't seem right at all.]

Yeah, that doesn't connect to the facts, Hiroshi! Ya gotta use careful logic with tough stuff like plates.

Exactly what logic are we talking about here, anyway?

They are named after their LOCATIONS, not the food substances they resemble.

...They have nothing to do with eating. Osaka, Maria, you ARE aware of what tectonic plates are, right?

Osaka says the world is a giant food tray and the plates keep moving around because whoever's carrying the earth is kinda clumsy. That's why we were matching our plates with food!

[It feels kind of silly hearing it now, but she doesn't want to lose face already.]

Y-yeah! And I think, uh, earthquakes happen when the plates touch each, right?

That is... a rather grandiose and silly metaphor, although Osaka is correct about plate overlap causing earthquakes. Actually, it is the heat of the inside of the earth itself causing the plates to move. They did teach you about this in your science courses, correct?

[This is homework, Hiroshi. That kind of implies that they taught about it. Of course, whether or not Maria or Osaka paid very good attention is very much up for grabs.]

... oh! I think I get it! Because the earth is hot it's sweaty! That's why it's so clumsy with the plates!
